New Year Tips for Success
It is at this time of year that we are faced with resolutions, annual goals, performance reviews and updating of business plans. According to Dale Carnegie, the key to success is to focus on bridging the gap between the idea and the follow-through. Whether you are working on individual, team or company strategies, you can’t be successful unless you put those strategies into action. Here are 6 tips how:
- Complete one important task every day. Refuse to quit until it’s done. Knowing that you did something that added value will give you a feeling of accomplishment and the motivation to tackle tomorrow’s tasks.
- Pay attention. Regardless of whether you are doing something new or routine, major or minor, truly focusing on your task can make an important difference. The old adage “haste makes waste” still holds true in 2006.
- Replay the video. Spend a few minutes at the end of the day thinking through the actions you took and the conversations you had. Acknowledge all the challenging situations you handled and look forward to ways you can handle others even better.
- Under 24 hour response time. Set this as your personal standard of responding to all emails and voice mails, and hold yourself accountable. Responding promptly lets others know you manage your time and respect theirs. (Another tip is to try to fit your response within the subject line – keep it short and keep it simple!)
- Share the news, good and bad. For true understanding and effective problem solving, both types of communication are vital.
- Spend 10% of your day connecting with those you work with. Ask them what they’re thinking and listen to what they say. This regular action will strengthen valuable relationships and build loyalty.
Don’t forget that “afterall, tomorrow is another day”, the line made famous by Vivian Leigh as Scarlet O’Hara in “Gone With the Wind”. We need not wait until December 31st to make resolutions or January 1st to start over, we have this chance every day!
What better key to success is there then understanding yourself and how others perceive you?
