Doing Double Duty:
Managing and Producing in Today’s Workplace

Most managers today’s workplace face the challenge of “dual roles”. Managers are asked to continue to perform the tasks that got them recognized and promoted, plus manage a staff, all while juggling more.

The workplace has become information overload with no break in sight, and the skills needed by a manager just five years ago no longer pertain to today’s workplace. Being a manager requires very different skills from performing selected responsibilities. You may feel overwhelmed or like you’re drowning. If you’re like many, at the end of the day, you often wonder what you actually accomplished (what with hundred of e-mails, dozens of phone calls, countless meetings, etc.).

Interpersonal skills have become critical requirements for managers so they can lead and manage for peak performance, develop staff and delegate effectively. Anyone who has supervisory responsibility, regardless if they are a new supervisor, experience senior manager, perform informal supervisory duties or are being groomed for a management role must be able to embrace change, have a knack for collaboration, and have the ability to design and execute a plan.

According to Stephen Covey, “"If I only had two hours to chop down a tree,’ a wise man once said, ‘I would spend the first hour sharpening my ax.’ Such wisdom may be axiomatic, and yet we see many people who are so busy sawing (working, producing, performing, managing, doing) that they never (or very seldom) stop to sharpen the saw (rest, recreate, study, prepare, reflect, rethink, retool, revitalize); nor do they invest in a new, high technology power saw. Instead, they work with ineffective tools—poor social skills and a dull mind, dissipated body, and weakened spirit.”

One role of management identified by Adizes is the producer (the high dominance DiSC profile style). This is someone skilled at getting the job done. Being able to produce is a valuable ability since it is important to obtain results in any organization. But if used in excess, it can cause an imbalance in the organization.

Other roles of effective and efficient management include having:

  • The organization administered in the right way
  • A proactive focus on changes in the external market which leads to creativity and risk taking
  • A focus on building a team effort

It is unlikely that any one manager can perform all four roles. That means bringing into play a complementary team and a decision-making process which reflects the different styles, attitudes, and opinions of these roles. This process ensures that:

  • Conflict is addressed
  • Making a decision together takes time and this time is valued
  • Decisions are implemented quickly
  • People trust each other to do the necessary tasks

Here is an example:

If the high dominance style manager dominates in the organization, that person can become a Lone Ranger—someone who tries to do all the work himself. He or she comes to work early and goes home late. If someone tells him he should delegate more, he says, "my people aren't ready." If he's told he should train his people, he claims not to have time. After awhile all his good people leave because they feel stifled and all he is left with are people who are willing to become go-fers, that is, go-for-this and go-for-that.

By understanding what makes you tick, you will have built the foundation upon which you can continue your leadership growth. My clients have found that using the DiSC PPSS Behavorial Assessment they can best:

  • Understand your management style and its impact on others, enabling you to modify your actions as necessary
  • Discover new opportunities to delegate, learning to trust and grow your direct reports, while targeting the developmental needs of each team member
  • Identify the performance expectations of employees, bosses and other workplace

You'll find information about several electronic self-assessments (or E-Assessments) at my web site. They are all on an easy-to-use web-based platform that allows you, your clients, and employees to access them online 24/7.
