Sustaining Success From Solid Relationships
Career success comes from building relationships based on trust. Here's how to do just that...
Create A Board Of Directors
Successful businesspeople have a personal board of directors - trusted individuals who tell the truth, know how you think and help you make decisions.
Don't simply look to those higher than you on the corporate ladder. And don't expect mentors to devote themselves to you selflessly.
Look for mentors who spark your creativity and share your business values. Spend time with them one-on-one, and discuss their issues as well as your own
Diversify
In the workplace, strive to create a network of people with different strengths, perspectives and experiences. Broaden your circle beyond your department.
If you're in marketing, for example, you might spend time with colleagues in the computer or accounting department... and listen to what they say.
Exposing yourself to different viewpoints enhances your judgment. Your "diversified portfolio" lowers risk and increases the likelihood of finding opportunities you might have missed.
Do A "Role Check"
In every situation, people are expected to play certain roles. In today's workplace, you could be team leader in one context and a subordinate in another.
With roles so fluid, you must continually define yours. Ask yourself...
-
What is my top priority?
-
To whom do I direct my loyalty?
-
What is expected of me?
If you work with friends: Clarify roles in advance. A bad business scenario can ruin a good friendship.
Watch Out For Leeches
Some people deplete your time, resources and energy. It is impossible to satisfy these "energy leeches." Don't try. Instead, set limits when dealing with them. Being eternally available helps neither of you.
Example: An energy leech asks for 20 minutes of your time. Tell him/her, "I only have 5." Make him focus on work - rather than gripes, personal problems, etc.
Consider People Over Time
It's important to hang onto relationships from previous jobs. Like good investments, relationships increase in value over time.
Leave doors open: If someone approaches you with a career/business opportunity and the time isn't right, say, "Thank you, but not now." A flat no shuts down possibilities later. Also send a gracious thank-you note. Make every "good-bye" a "good-bye for now" - a bridge to future connections.
The key to mastering relationship success is understanding first your own behavior style and then the style of those you interact with. DiSC is a multi-level learning instrument that helps you assess how much you use each dimension or combination of behaviors in a particular situation. The feedback covers a broad range of behavioral characteristics including:
- Behavioral strengths and weaknesses
- Motivating and demotivating factors
- Management and communication styles
